It took the AKC until the year of 1985.

Temperament:
These dogs are like most terriers very stubborn and independent. They're alert, intelligent and inventive, as the treshold for boredom is pretty low which often results in shenanigans. Because of this they require a lot of exercise, stimulation but most importantly - attention. They have a very strong prey drive, like most hunting dogs, and any future owners should be aware of this.

Health:
Fox Terriers are healthy dogs generally, and responsible breeders screen their stock for health conditions such as eye disorders (cataracts, primary lens luxation, and glaucoma), luxating patellas, elbow and hip dysplasia, and a neurological condition known as 'wobbler's gait.'

The teeth should be brushed often, using a toothpaste formulated for dogs. Regular visits to the vet for checkups and parasite control Help to ensure the dog a long, healthy life.

Recommended Health Tests From the National Breed Club:

  • Patella Evaluation
  • Cardiac Exam
