If you posted only a picture of a silhoutte of a Dachshund, most people would be able to guess its breed. Dachshunds have the great iconic look of long-back'ed bodies and short legs. The look isn't the only thing that's recognizable but dachshunds are also famous for their big personalities. They are world wide one of the most iconic breeds, and according to ACK was ranked 12th in popularity among Dog breeds in the United States in 2018. The dachshund's characteristics is what makes them such popular and great companion dogs as well as in serving their original purpose of hunting.

Average lifespann: 12-16 years

Height: 20-35 cm or about 9 inches

Weight: 3-9kg or 6.6-19.4 lbs

Looks and characteristics:
With their short, stubby, legs in comparison to their long bodies these dogs are very easily recognized all around the world. They have a well developed jaw and bite, as have many hunting dogs of this type. Their ears are semi-long and droopy and their chests deep; providing plenty of space for lung capacity. In many parts of the world dachshunds come in 3 sizes: standard, miniature and "kaninchen" (rabbit in german). The miniature and standard size are universally recognized but the rabbit size cannot be found in some clubs such as the AKC or KC The measurement of the chest girth determines what size any dachshund classify as.

There are 3 different coat varieties: smooth coat (short hair), long-haired, and wire-haired.

Colors:
Black, black & cream, black & tan, blue & tan, chocolate, chocolate & tan, cream, fawn, red, wheaten, wild boar, blue & cream, fawn & tan, fawn & cream, chocolate & cream.

History and origins:
The dachshund's country of origin is German and their original purpose was to to scent, chase, hunt small animals, and flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals. Their name means "badger dog/hound" which describe their purpose pretty well. They were propably bred from the deutsche bracken around the middle ages and has long been a national symbol of Germany. Due to selective breeding the difference in coats exists to aid the dog hunting in different enviroments, so aside from the standard smooth coat you have the wire coats for thorny brier patches and long coats for cold climates.

Temparement
What can often be said about dachshunds is their big personalities making a contrast to their small bodies. In order to be able to hunt, these dogs are energic and tireless with an endearing nature. As is typical of flushing and earth-working-dogs they are to be curageous and stubborn; two attributes that makes for great earth-working-dogs. Their independency is especially important when they're in burrows; the hunter won't be able to accompany them down there. These attributes makes them charming companion dogs, it's propably why they are so popular.

Health
Aside from an increased risk of spinal problems, Degenerative disc disease and other back-related problems (Due to their long spinal columm and short ribcage), dachshund are considered to be a generally healthy breed. It is therefore important to exercise them to maintain a good muscle tone, avoid activities that could strain their backs (such as jumping) and avoid rough handleing and keep them from becoming overweight.

Correlation does not equal causation.
